The name Baghdad means the Garden of God. The name is no longer appropriate. For centuries it was known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Now its landscape is marred by concrete blast walls, barbed wire, steel barricades, sandbags and crumbling buildings riddled by bullet holes and ransacked by explosions. Of course they now do have democracy. They did have an election and are working on a constitution. However, does anyone really believe that our form of democracy can work in a region that historically has had different cultural and religious roots? Iraq will revert to what it has been for centuries; a male dominated society, religiously biased, and tribal in nature. The only way we can hope to achieve our objectives is to continue to control the puppet government by maintaining our current troop levels in the country. Our occupation of Iraq will continue to be costly with a contiuing loss of troops and damage to our economy. Our continuing occupation be never be accepted by the Iraqi or neighboring Arab people. At the present time Iraq may be more appropriately called the Garden of Despair .
